Seattle Post-Intelligencer: 'Spam King' [Robert Soloway] gets nearly 4 years in prison
‘Soloway — composed and smartly attired in a conservative suit and muted tie — told [Judge] Pechman: “I take full responsibility for everything I’ve done. I am sorry for all the people that got the e-mails.”
Pechman asked Soloway why he continued with his spamming after another judge in a civil lawsuit enjoined him from continuing.
Soloway spoke frankly. “I was used to living a certain lifestyle, and I tried to maintain it. I tried to live beyond my means.
“It was a new law. I thought I would find a loophole.”’
Convicted penny-stock spammer Eddie Davidson appears to have found a loophole — apparently he’s escaped from prison.
For many years, I’ve been wondering what causes marketers to cross the line and become spammers. It can’t be as simple as “all marketers are inherently evil,” statistical evidence aside. Perhaps it happens when they start to believe that the rules don’t apply to them?
